Coquitlam is a city in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Coquitlam is one of the 21 municipalities comprising Metro Vancouver. Coquitlam is situated 10 km east of Vancouver where the Coquitlam River connects with the Fraser River and extends northeast along the Pitt River toward the Coquitlam and Pitt lakes. Coquitlam borders Burnaby and Port Moody to the west, New Westminster to the southwest, Port Coquitlam to the southeast, and the Coast Mountains to the north. With a population in the last census of over 114,000 people, it is also one of the larger cities in the province, with a large ethnic population that exceeds 34% of the residents, 13% higher than the provincial average. Coquitlam is also said to have a higher growth rate, younger population, and above average income than other spots in the GVRD.
Education
Coquitlam is served by School District 43 Coquitlam, and the district has 53 elementary schools (Grades K-5), 13 middle schools (Grade 6-8) and seven secondary schools (Grades 9-12). The area is served by several post secondary institutions in the area, University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. Also, Capilano College, Langara College, Vancouver Community College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and Douglas College have campuses throughout the Greater Vancouver area.
Housing
As with most areas of the Lower Mainland, prices are quite high in Coquitlam. In fact, in the last 5 years prices are up 89% on detached homes, making the average price just over $680,000. Apartment shoppers fare a bit better at an average price of only $296,000 and townhomes come in at $434,000.
